The Netherlands was one of the first members of the United Nations (UN), the world organisation for international peace and security. As a UN member, the Netherlands works to promote the international legal order, improve the observance of human rights, protect the environment, and contribute to sustainable development. The importance of the Netherlands as a centre for international law is affirmed by the presence in The Hague of the UN International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the International Criminal Court, and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
The Netherlands regularly provides troops for UN international peace missions.
